{"id":326,"date":"2017-08-06T06:48:28","date_gmt":"2017-08-06T06:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/writeonyoga.com\/blog\/?p=326"},"modified":"2018-08-09T22:20:10","modified_gmt":"2018-08-09T22:20:10","slug":"the-arrogance-of-a-generation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writeonyoga.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/06\/the-arrogance-of-a-generation\/","title":{"rendered":"The Arrogance of a Generation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Hip Replacements seems to be a trend these days.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Before my diagnoses I only heard of this happening to a few very elderly people, certainly not yoga teachers and certainly never me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0Shortly a<\/span>fter a\u00a0severe bike fall, pain began, then the X-ray, then diagnose, all, just 8 months ago. I am scheduled for surgery in one week .<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, it is\u00a0quite humbling\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">I was doing some research and I was stunned to read\u00a0a yoga teacher writing that yoga may contribute to people needing hip replacements.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I even heard that because Lady Gaga did yoga she had to have a hip replacement!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not considering all the other things she did on stage that may have been a greater cause for her condition.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Now<\/span>\u00a0my professional conclusion is: \u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><em>SHIT HAPPENS<\/em>!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0I am in my early 60&#8217;s and I have always been active. \u00a0Yoga has been my main love and has balanced\u00a0everything else that\u00a0I did (hiking, biking swimming).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yoga has saved me, healed me on all levels.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If I had been forewarned that either forward bends, backbends, or twists might become\u00a0the contributing cause to my present situation, do I wish I never did it?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The answer would be \u201cNo!\u201d Would I have changed how I practiced?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cNo!\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> I have been blessed with great teachers and yoga has only been a great blessing in my life. Would any athlete stop doing something for fear of possible injury?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How many yoga practitioners are out there?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Lots and Lots, thousands, lots of thousands.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My parents never did anything past the age of 25, they ate what they wanted they smoked and drank and lived into their 80&#8217;s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Shit Happens<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0and \u00a0w<\/span>e have bodies.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We age regardless of what we do, what we eat, or how we think. If we are vegetarian, paleo or vegan, whichever is the latest politically correct food trend on the calendar, something will get us in the end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0Our generation is steeped in its own arrogance. \u00a0It is humility and humbleness that overwhelms me knowing that\u00a0we may not be the ones who control the weather, or what could\u00a0happen to us in our smallness while on this earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">But, that being said, I am forever grateful to\u00a0all of my mentors and students\u00a0for the healing tools that have made my life a source of inspiration for myself and others. It is the quality of our life that is improved through the good practices and healing sources that we gain and cultivate for our time on earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">I am humbled as I realize my own arrogance. As someone who has done yoga for so many years thinking that I am beyond what all others will have to go through as the reality of aging reflects back at us. It will be with the help of yoga along with all of my other healing tools collected through my life, that I will move through this.\u00a0 I hopefully will resume my freedom of movement new and improved.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0With a greater sense of compassion, humility and respect for life and the changes that lead us to a greater appreciation for the spiritual within us and the joy of life around me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Meanwhile lots of balance poses, strengthening poses and anything else I can figure out in this uncharted territory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong><em>After thoughts:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Since originally posting this, it has been over\u00a0three years since having surgery. \u00a0I have resumed all of my usual activity.\u00a0 I am exploring further possibilities while respecting that life brings teachers clothed in all sorts of varying styles. \u00a0Some are human while some are situations. \u00a0I hope to be an inspiration for others as I learn to move in the flow of life one breath at a time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hip Replacements seems to be a trend these days.\u00a0 Before my diagnoses I only heard of this happening to a few very elderly people, certainly not yoga teachers and certainly never me.\u00a0Shortly after a\u00a0severe bike fall, pain began, then the X-ray, then diagnose, all, just 8 months ago.
